When I first packed up my entire 21 years of life into two small suitcases and left my home country to pursue my dream of a Canadian education, I had no idea where to begin. Arriving at Acadia University, I was focused on finding a part-time job to help ease my parents' burden in paying for my tuition. It was during this time that I discovered Enactus Acadia and the incredible opportunities it offered to students. Even though there were no paid positions available at the time, I jumped at the chance to join their marketing team as a volunteer. The reason was simple: the amazing team, the wealth of workshops, and the networking opportunities.
Soon after, through Enactus, I was introduced to Launchbox Acadia - a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship where creativity takes flight. This experience eventually led me to the role of Program Coordinator (Full-time Co-op) at Launchbox Acadia after months of volunteering and part-time paid positions.
Looking back at the past two years in Canada, I can honestly say that volunteering has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. From Enactus Acadia to the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, Valley Regional Hospital, and beyond, I've had the privilege of serving my community in a variety of ways. And what's even more gratifying is that many of these volunteer roles opened doors to paid opportunities.
There were times when people told me that volunteering was a waste of time - especially when I was unsure about my next steps. At one point, I even questioned myself. But, looking back, I’m incredibly grateful that nothing deterred me from continuing to serve. My family’s encouragement and support helped me stay grounded in my belief that volunteering is not just about giving back, but about growing as a person and professional.
Having lived this experience, I want to take a moment to reflect on the true power behind volunteering and how it has shaped my journey:
Volunteering isn’t just about giving back - it’s a pathway to personal growth and self-discovery. Whether it's refining your leadership abilities, learning how to manage complex projects, or enhancing your communication skills, volunteering offers you the opportunity to develop a diverse skill set while contributing to causes larger than yourself.
Every hour spent volunteering is an investment in your own future. It allows you to sharpen valuable life skills like problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork - qualities that benefit you both professionally and personally.
There’s a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from using your talents for the greater good. Volunteering allows you to apply your skills to real-world challenges, turning passion into meaningful action and impact.
Volunteering is about more than just giving time - it’s about building relationships that can last a lifetime. By working alongside others in your community, you connect with like-minded individuals, all bringing their own experiences and perspectives. These connections often lead to unexpected opportunities, friendships, and collaborations that continue to enrich your life.
Volunteering challenges you to step outside your comfort zone and tackle problems you might not otherwise encounter. Conquering these challenges builds not just confidence, but resilience - the ability to bounce back and keep going, no matter the obstacles. Every experience makes you stronger and more capable of handling whatever comes next.
Last but not least,
The experience you gain through volunteering can be an invaluable asset to your resume. Employers increasingly value candidates who demonstrate not only technical skills, but a commitment to community involvement and social responsibility. Volunteering shows that you're a well-rounded individual, someone who actively contributes to both your personal growth and the betterment of the world around you.
In the end, what volunteering has taught me most is that the value it brings is immeasurable. It has opened doors, connected me with incredible people, and allowed me to grow in ways I never could have imagined when I first arrived in Canada. Whether you're looking to build skills, expand your network, or simply give back, volunteering is one of the most powerful ways to make a meaningful difference in your life - and the lives of others.
